More details and real-life images of BYD‘s upcoming electric hatchback, the “Great Seagull” (Da Haiou), have emerged online. Positioned between the current Seagull (named Dolphin Mini/Surf in some markets) and the Dolphin, this new model brings improvements in size, technology, and performance.
Enhanced dimensions
The Great Seagull’s design is characterised by a closed-off front grille, intricate geometric lines, and polygonal light clusters. It will be available in a new “Ink Green” colour option.
The vehicle has grown compared to the current Seagull, with dimensions now measuring 4205mm in length, 1810mm in width, and 1570mm in height. Notably, the wheelbase has been extended by 150mm to reach 2650mm, making its overall footprint comparable to the BYD Dolphin.
Technology and interior
A feature of the new model is the inclusion of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, indicating support for BYD’s “God’s Eye B” (DiPilot 300) driver-assistance system. This system is expected to enable urban and highway navigation on autopilot, as well as automated parking, traffic light recognition, and autonomous lane changing.
Inside, the traditional instrument cluster has been removed in favour of a larger central touchscreen. The interior also features a spacious centre console area and a simplified two-spoke steering wheel.
Performance and battery
The Great Seagull is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum output of 95 kW (127 hp). It utilises lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs produced by FinDreams, with two capacity options – 30 kWh and 39.2 kWh – offering a CLTC range between 320 km (259 km WLTP) and 420 km (340 km WLTP). The vehicle reaches a top speed of 150 km/h.
Market positioning
While the current Seagull starts at 69,800 yuan (approx. 10,300 USD), the Great Seagull is positioned as a more premium, feature-rich alternative, serving as a more accessible and slightly less powerful alternative to the BYD Dolphin.
According to China EV DataTracker, BYD delivered 10,103 Seagull units domestically in July 2026. The BYD Dolphin delivered 16,829 units in the same period.
