  • The Hyundai Ioniq V opened for pre-sales in China in August, with pre-sales prices starting at 119,900 yuan ($17,770).
  • It is the first mass-produced model of Hyundai's Ioniq brand in China, developed under the leadership of a Chinese team and set to be exported globally.

Beijing Hyundai will officially launch the Ioniq V on September 29, kicking off its product counteroffensive in the world's largest electric vehicle market.

Hyundai Motor's Chinese joint venture announced the plan on Weibo on Tuesday, without providing further details.

The mid-size sedan opened for pre-sales at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, offering 3 variants priced between 119,900 yuan ($17,770) and 139,900 yuan.

The Ioniq V is the first mass-produced model of Hyundai's Ioniq brand since its entry into China, and marks the opening move in the brand's premium new energy vehicle positioning.

The new vehicle was developed entirely under the leadership of Hyundai's China design center and tailored for Chinese users, while also being planned as a global model that can be exported to other markets.

It is the production version of the Venus Concept unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April.

The Ioniq V is 4,900 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,470 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, featuring a fastback silhouette and frameless doors.

The exterior is available in 8 colors, including Cyber Gold, Dimension Purple, Gamma Green, and Magnetic Gray.

Built on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), the Ioniq V comes in two single-motor versions with outputs of 140 kW (188 hp) and 168 kW.

The batteries are supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750), using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, with capacities of 53.5 kWh and 66.8 kWh.

Its CLTC range spans 520 km to 650 km, and it supports 800-volt high-voltage fast charging.

Smart features are an area Beijing Hyundai has focused on strengthening for the Chinese market. The Ioniq V is equipped with a 27-inch 4K ultra-slim central control screen and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8295 cockpit chip.

The infotainment system integrates AI large language models including Baidu's Ernie Bot and ByteDance's Doubao, and features a "Cyber Eye" head-up display system.

The driver-assistance system was jointly developed by Beijing Hyundai and Momenta (HKEX: 6880), enabling L2+ functions on highways.

These features show that Hyundai is increasingly adopting smart technology solutions from local Chinese suppliers to narrow the gap with domestic brands.

The launch of the Ioniq V will be the first market test of Hyundai's latest China strategy.

The company officially introduced the Ioniq brand to China in April and plans to launch 20 battery electric vehicle (BEV) and EREV models in the local market over the next 5 years.

Hyundai hopes to leverage a faster local development pace and cooperation with the Chinese supply chain to grow its China business to 500,000 vehicles by 2030.
