Avatr canceled the launch event for its new 07L Max electric SUV on October 28, one day before it was scheduled to begin, and launched the car anyway the next evening.[1][2] The cancellation is the visible half of the story. The verifiable half is the sales and money record.
Media-reported retail data put the brand's sales down about 50 percent year on year through September, its Hong Kong listing prospectus records cumulative losses above 13.2 billion yuan (about $1.9 billion), and the IPO application had to be refiled on June 30 after the first filing lapsed in May.[1][4] A carmaker in that position converts a stage show into a discount, and the October 29 debut did exactly that. For a buyer, the result is concrete.
The new Max battery-electric version, at a limited-time 215,900 yuan, carries the Max tier of Huawei driver-assistance hardware at the Elite's guide price, minus the air suspension Avatr reserves for its two pricier versions.[2][3]
A canceled show, and a launch that went ahead anyway
On October 28 Avatr, the premium electric brand Changan developed with Huawei and CATL, announced it was scrapping the October 29 launch for the 07L Max battery-electric version.[1][4] The statement named no reason and promised only that the car would arrive "at a more sincere price."[1] On launch day Avatr executive Yong Jun posted his own explanation. People, he said, may be used to glittering stages and polished slides, but the configuration and price revealed that evening would be "the response given in actual action."[1] A video of a heated internal meeting, in which he slams a pen on a desk and says the launch event should be scrapped and promotion cut, spread online the same day.
Viewer reactions split, some praising the cost-cutting gesture and others calling the multi-camera footage an acted script, and the video's authenticity is unproven either way.[1]
The launch itself went ahead that evening. Guide price 229,900 yuan, limited-time benefit price 215,900 yuan, ordering open through the official app, website, mini-program and stores.[2][3]
The sales baseline, read in two data families
The sharpest figures come from a commentary column, 车观察 (Che Guancha), carried on Tencent's platform, citing retail data whose provider the report leaves unnamed. It reports 39,100 units for January through September 2026, down 50.1 percent year on year. September alone came to 3,046 units, 62 percent below the 8,020 sold a year earlier and below August's 4,384, about 30 percent of the 10,000-per-month target the column cites.[1]
Company-side data tell the same directional story. Avatr's updated prospectus shows 20,160 vehicles sold from January to May 2026, roughly 4,030 a month, 2,949 of them overseas.[4] CnEVPost counted 35,250 for January through July, about 5,040 a month, "still well behind China's leading EV startups", with startups such as Nio and Xpeng reaching around 40,000 units in June.[4][5]
| Data family (attribution) | Figure | Period | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 车观察 (Che Guancha) retail series [1] | 39,100, down 50.1% YoY; Sept 3,046, down 62% YoY | Jan–Sep 2026 | retail data, provider unnamed, as reported |
| Prospectus data [4] | 20,160 (2,949 overseas) | Jan–May 2026 | company filing |
| CnEVPost count [5] | 35,250 | Jan–Jul 2026 | as reported by CnEVPost |
The two series do not reconcile to the digit and appear to count differently, so do not add them together. The direction is the same on both. Volume is not scaling, and the canceled show sits on top of that fact.
The finances explain the missing stage show
Avatr's prospectus records cumulative net losses above 13.2 billion yuan (about $1.9 billion) across 2022 to 2025 and warns the company may stay loss-making through 2026; the 13.2 billion figure matches what the Chinese commentary cites.[1][4] In 2025 cost of sales consumed 90.6 percent of revenue, and cash and equivalents fell from 19.32 billion yuan at the end of 2024 to 9.69 billion a year later, then 6.25 billion by April 30, 2026.[4] There is an improvement side to the same filings. Revenue reached 25.63 billion yuan in 2025, close to 4.5 times the level of three years earlier, the net loss narrowed to 3.49 billion, and gross margin climbed from 6.3 percent to 9.4 percent.[4] Strain and progress coexist in these accounts, and neither cancels the other.
The listing process itself is also moving. The first prospectus, filed in November 2025, lapsed in May 2026 when its six-month validity ran out, and Avatr refiled on June 30.[4] None of this proves why Avatr canceled the event; the company's only stated reason remains the "more sincere price" line.[1] It does explain the room the decision was made in.
A carmaker watching cash reserves shrink while sales stagnate has a clear incentive to trade a show for a discount, and the format of the October 29 debut matched that.
What 215,900 yuan buys, and what stays above
Before October 29 the 07L came in three versions, Elite at 229,900 yuan, Max+ at 249,900 and the Ultra at 279,900.[2] The new Max battery-electric trim slots between Elite and Max+ at exactly the Elite's guide price, and 14,000 yuan below it under its own limited-time price.[2]
Mechanically it is the Elite's car. A 305 kW single rear motor with 435 N·m of torque, an 89.33 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the lower-cost chemistry common at this price, and 725 kilometers of range on China's CLTC test cycle, which runs more lenient than the EPA and WLTP ratings used elsewhere.
The car covers 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and its 800-volt silicon-carbide platform refills from 0 to 80 percent in 20 minutes.[2][5]
The upgrade lives in the driver-assistance stack. The Elite carries Huawei's ADS Pro version with an in-cabin LiDAR.
The new Max gets the ADS Max version with an 896-line LiDAR as standard, and highway navigation assist, city navigation assist and parking assist come standard on the tier, while parking-spot-to-parking-spot navigation and City LCC Plus, a lane-keeping assist feature, are options on this trim.[2][5] What stays reserved for Max+ and Ultra is the smart air spring and Avatr's adaptive "magic carpet" suspension. The new Max makes do with CDC adaptive dampers, like the Elite.[2][5]
The limited-time package, for orders placed by November 30, 2026, bundles nine benefits Avatr values at more than 80,000 yuan, among them 4,000 yuan in cash, a 10,000-yuan purchase-tax subsidy, trade-in subsidies, first-owner lifetime warranty covering the battery, electric motor and electronic control system, and a voucher covering the full 21,000-yuan price of Huawei's ADS Max advanced feature package.[3][6] That voucher is the fine print that matters. The Max tier's hardware advantage over the Elite is standard equipment; some top-tier functions remain options on this trim, so the voucher's coverage deserves a store-level check before signing.[2][3]
Repeated repricing since August, and what a buyer should check
The debut continues a pattern that started months earlier. When the 07L launched on August 8, Avatr added the entry Elite version and cut the starting price by 20,000 yuan against pre-sale prices.[5] On October 15 the refreshed 2026 Avatr 06 sedan arrived with its lineup cut from five variants to two Max trims, a 14,000-yuan cash incentive and limited-time benefits worth up to 58,000 yuan.[6] In the 250,000 to 300,000 yuan electric SUV segment where the 07L counts the Xiaomi YU7 among its main rivals, Avatr has made three repricing moves since August 8, and an extended-range 07L is still to come.[5]
Four checks deserve a buyer's time before the benefits deadline of November 30.
- The nine benefits are limited-time and require an order placed by November 30, 2026 (inclusive). The 215,900-yuan price also carries a limited-time label, but no end date for it has been published, so confirm the price in effect at the store before ordering.[3]
- The ADS Max voucher covers a package priced at 21,000 yuan. It is worth confirming at a store which functions sit inside that package, since parking-spot-to-parking-spot navigation and City LCC Plus are options on this trim.[2][3]
- Avatr's own site cautions that advertised configurations may not match the delivered car and that some functions arrive only after over-the-air updates, so the promised feature list deserves confirmation in writing before signing.[7]
- Changan plans to integrate its Deepal brand with Avatr, a move the prospectus report links to fresh uncertainty about premium positioning and sales-network strategy. Continuity of local dealers and service points is the item to watch, more than the canceled stage show.[4]
The cancellation and the debut amount to one decision. The stage was the piece Avatr cut; the price and the benefit list are what the launch now rests on.
If the four checks hold at a store, the 215,900-yuan Max is the fullest version yet of the 07L's driver-assistance promise at the line's lowest documented price. With three repricing moves since August, the discounting is unlikely to stop soon, so timing an order matters as much as picking the trim.
