BYD (HKEX: 1211) will debut a new model at the Guangzhou Auto Show later this month, likely the next-generation Han, refreshing a sedan lineup whose sales remain under pressure.
Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty sales division, said on Weibo on November 2 that the company would bring "a model highly requested by customers" to the Guangzhou Auto Show in November, without naming the vehicle.
Recent regulatory filings suggest the model is likely to be the next-generation Han.
This year's Guangzhou Auto Show will run from November 27 to December 6. The opening day is reserved for the media and typically features a concentration of new vehicle debuts.
The new Han appeared in the 412th batch of vehicle filings released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on October 16, covering 3 battery-electric variants and 1 plug-in hybrid variant, all with 5 seats.
The sedan measures 5,156 mm in length and 1,969 mm in width, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm. Compared with the Han EV flash charging edition launched in April, it is 161 mm longer and has a 110 mm longer wheelbase.
The battery-electric variants offer single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive options. The 2 rear-wheel-drive variants have peak motor outputs of 245 kW (329 hp) and 300 kW, respectively.
The all-wheel-drive variant combines a 200 kW front motor with a 320 kW rear motor for a combined peak output of 520 kW. The plug-in hybrid variant pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with a 200 kW drive motor.
The new Han in these filings is a separate model from the Da Han, which BYD launched on October 13. The latter is positioned higher in the lineup, measuring 5,256 mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, and starts at 235,900 yuan ($35,110).
The Han update comes as sales remain under pressure. The series sold 6,566 vehicles in October, down 52.11% year-on-year but up 159.63% from September, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
In the first 10 months of the year, cumulative Han sales totaled 50,890 vehicles, down 67.39% year-on-year, underscoring the pressure on BYD to revive the sedan lineup through product updates.
By contrast, overall sales of the Dynasty lineup have returned to growth. Lu said the lineup sold 203,040 vehicles in October, up 13.6% year-on-year and 14.4% month-on-month, exceeding 200,000 vehicles for the first time this year.
BYD is also preparing to launch the third-generation Tang, a large 5-seat SUV. Lu said in the same Weibo post that launch preparations were underway and display vehicles had begun arriving at dealerships.
The third-generation Tang SUV made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in August and is set to go on sale this quarter.
