Chinese automaker Li Auto will begin small-batch vehicle integration of solid-state battery technology in 2027 or 2028. However, the mature mass production of such packs for vehicles is expected to take another five years.
On September 22, Cls reported that sources within Li Auto have revealed that the company’s solid-state battery (SSB) technology is expected to be ready for small-batch vehicle integration by 2027 or 2028. Senior director of traction batteries at Li Auto, Liu Zhimin, shared that the company is “actively laying the groundwork” for solid-state battery technology.
Li Auto currently runs multiple related projects. The prototype validation has already been conducted using smart glasses that the company also sells in China. However, the sources shared that achieving mature mass production for vehicles while ensuring a “consistent user experience” is expected to take another five years. This means the mass-produced Li Auto vehicles with SSB technology will enter the market in 2032 or 2033.
Liu Zhimin shared that the core challenges of making solid-state batteries include requirements for lifespan, charging performance, and cost. Previously, Li Auto revealed that its entire lineup will adopt in-house developed batteries. It will allow the brand to control the supply chain, potentially making its products more cost-effective. Li Auto-branded packs have already been deployed in the Li Auto L6, the Li Auto L8, and the Li Auto i8.
According to a previous report from 36kr, Li Auto has launched a business unit dedicated to supplying its in-house developed tech to third-party companies. It focuses on Mach M100 autonomous driving chips with a computing power of 1,280 TOPS, SiC power modules, and EREV powertrain systems. However, the company’s batteries weren’t being considered for supply to other automakers.
As it comes from China EV DataTracker, Li Auto delivered 259,930 units domestically from January to August 2025, down 1.2% Year-Over-Year. Its current bestseller is the Li Auto i6 electric SUV with a price range from 249,800 to 269,800 yuan (37,310 – 40,300 USD). It sold 152,842 cars in the first eight months of 2026.
